50 customers talk about Nortel

As Joel Hackney mentioned in his previous guest blog post, today Nortel issued a release to highlight the move by enterprises to Nortel’s enterprise data solutions.

What was a little easy to miss in the news, however, was a second document (PDF) that literally voices the individual thoughts of 50 Nortel data customers. As a former PR guy, I am nothing short of amazed at the ability to get 50 customers’ individual quotes into a single document.

The most evident common theme across the quotes was around network reliability and uptime - with multiple references to Nortel SMLT and “unique architectures.” A great price-to-performance ratio, trust in Nortel, and the willingness to partner with the customer were other common themes.

While all 50 quotes provide their own interesting angle, some of you busy bodies out there might not be willing to sit down and read through the entire 13 page document. So in my never-ending effort to “add value” - here is my own personal top 10 list:

Guest blog by Joel Hackney from Interop

Joel Hackney, Nortel President of Enterprise SolutionsThis week Nortel and the industry’s focus turn to Interop in Las Vegas. Joel Hackney, Nortel’s president of Enterprise Solutions, is at the show this week talking to customers, partners and media. Since Joel took the reins of Nortel’s enterprise business last year, he has talked to customers around the world about their networking needs.  Joel took some time out from his busy Interop schedule to tell us what he’s hearing from them.  Below is his guest blog.

Nortel’s network reliability is good as gold

The Super Pit gold mine in Western Australia

On Monday, Nortel issued two pieces of enterprise news around Interop.  One was our new virtualization solution that I wrote about previously.  The other was this release detailing our win with Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM).  Quite frankly, I didn’t even read this second release until today, when this article in ZDNet Australia piqued my interest.  Between the release and the article, the network deployment highlights an interesting story.

KCGM operates the “Super Pit“, a huge mine in …

John Roese wins another award

Less than a month ago I wrote a post about how Nortel CTO John Roese had been named the  Next-Generation Executive of the Year at the 2008 Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI) Awards.

Now, the Ottawa Business Journal has included John Roese in it’s annual list of “Forty under 40.”  The OBJ selects people that “represent the region’s most dynamic, successful and community-minded businesspeople.”  The Forty Under 40 award recipients will be profiled in OBJ’s June 16 issue.

Nortel’s new ad campaign

On Monday, Nortel launched a set of new commercials. Unlike the technology-focused commercials we launched a few months ago, these commercials focus on customer stories.

The first new commercial below highlights the InterContinental San Francisco, a new luxury hotel that I recently blogged about detailing its Nortel VoIP and WLAN deployment (and their hyerconnected minibar).

The second new Nortel commercial below highlights Mumbai International Airport in India, a customer we announced last year.

If you’d like to see more Nortel commercials and videos, be sure to go look at the Nortel channel on YouTube. And while …

Nortel goes virtual in Vegas

Is it really time for Interop Las Vegas already? I have always associated Interop, the industry’s big enterprise data event, with the last big show before summer…but it’s still snowing in Minnesota. All the same, the industry is off to Vegas this week to the beautiful Mandalay Bay (which is a Nortel customer by the way).

And while the conference officially kicks off tomorrow, Nortel has already come out of the gate with news on our new network virtualization solution. The solution is based on Nortel’s Ethernet Routing Switch 8600, and the new Nortel Virtual Services Switch 5000.  The ERS 8600 provides network virtualization through high-density 10G switching, industry-leading resiliency, Layer 3 routing virtualization and simplified VPN provisioning. The VSS 5000 provides service virtualization by consolidating and virtualizing multiple network services -such as firewalls, application switching and SSL acceleration - onto a single platform, and is able to provision these services on-the-fly. VSS 5000 is also interoperates with server virtualization solutions such as VMware.

The new Nortel Virtual Services Switch 5000 - part of Nortel’s new virtualization solution

In essence, Nortel’s virtualization solution pools together separate elements, even separate networks, to work as one and for their collective capabilities to be used where they are needed, when they are needed. For hosted service providers, this solution enables them to “do more with less,” allowing virtual separation of customer networks and services.  For enterprises, the solution provides CapEx benefits through reduced network gear, and the ability to bring up new services quickly. NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation (a systems integrator in Japan) and PLC a construction company in Edmonton, Alberta) have already deployed the solution.

Nortel’s new open-source UC solution for SMBs

One piece of Nortel news that slipped past me recently was our introduction of the Software Communication System (SCS) 500, a new unified communications solution targeted specifically for SMBs in the 30-500 user range (though it can scale to 1000).

The Nortel Softphone 3455 - which can be used as part of Nortel’s software-based SCS 500 unified communications solution for SMBsA new UC solution from Nortel for SMBs, you say? Probably some new cousin of our BCM50 or some scaled down version of one of our IP-PBXs, right?  One way or another you’re probably thinking “a new box.”

But no, this new product release is a shiny, round…disk.  A CD-ROM — because SCS500 is completely software-based.  Not only that, but it is built on open source technology — SIPfoundry sipXecs to be exact.  Yes you heard me right — Nortel just introduced a new fully software-based, open source solution.  Got your attention?  Here are the details….

SCS500 bundles together VoIP, instant messaging, presence, on-demand audio/video conferencing, unified messaging
The solution also provides some advanced call routing features that are not commonly available on SMB solutions, including automatic call distribution (ACD), advanced auto attendant, personal auto attendant, and find me / follow me.
Two softphone clients are available as part of the solution.  You can also use Nortel IP phones, LG-Nortel IP phones, or even multi-supplier devices.
Application integration is a big focus, with plug ins available for Microsoft Outlook and IBM Lotus Notes that integrate SCS500’s UC capabilities with those applications.
Go here for an interactive virtual tour of the SCS500 and some of it’s capabilities (mainly focused on VoIP and softphone capabilities).  There are some additional details and multimedia tools available off the Nortel UC solutions for SMBs page.

To be clear, you can’t just go to your local Best Buy and buy a copy of SCS500 off the shelf.  The solution is currently available on IBM and Dell servers.  In fact, we’ve talked about these two offerings individually in a few recent press releases.

Top 10 list for businesses going green

Like I said earlier this week — everyone’s going green.  It’s morally, politically, and economically the thing to do.  But if you are a business, how do you do it?  With so many opinions (and cost ramifications) on ways to better your environmental impact, it can be hard for a well-intentioned company to know where to start.

As a follow-up to yesterday’s Q&A with Rick Dipper, Rick and his team put together the below top 10 list for businesses going green.  Take a look and let me know what you think.  Did Rick and his team miss any big ones?  And let us know if your company is doing any of these already.  And if you’re hungry for more info on the …

Q&A with Rick Dipper on Nortel’s green efforts

Last week as we drew closer to Earth Day, I talked to Rick Dipper about Nortel’s Green IT efforts. Nortel has long been known as an environmentally conscious company, but only recently have we also started talking up some of our energy efficiency advantages as well.

Rick Dipper talks about Nortel’s green effortsBased in RTP, Rick heads up Nortel’s green efforts as part of his larger Corporate Responsibility role. Rick and I talked through the energy usage details of VoIP and IP Phones, the need for businesses to evaluate their voice and data networks when looking to be more energy efficient, how Nortel stacks up to our competitors in energy efficiency, as well as Nortel’s own internal green efforts. Below is our conversation:

What is your title and role within Nortel? Leader, Corporate Responsibility and I am part of a team that leads our Green efforts within Nortel. I also lead other areas for Nortel: Environment, Health, and Safety, Records Management, Business Continuity, and Corporate Citizenship.

What has your focus been on recently? Much of my focus lately has been on all things Green - what Nortel is doing, what our peers, customers, competitors are doing, what’s world class and innovative in this space…this is an incredibly dynamic environment, as essentially we’re all learning together. From a historical perspective, we’re barely out of the blocks and this provides an incredibly unique opportunity for all of us to set the pace moving forward.

Green IT is the in thing right now, and I hear lots of vendors talking it up. Isn’t Nortel just following a trend here? Nortel has had a long environmental history, dating back to when we were the first company to eliminate CFC’s from manufacturing in the early 1990’s. We had a bit of a lull during our lean years; however, work in this area continued and when we took an inventory last year, we realized that we had a compelling story that we weren’t telling anyone. We’re quickly regaining our voice in this area. There is a global dialogue occurring and it’s important that we participate for many reasons, both from a business perspective where we can contribute solutions as well as from a personal perspective, where we must take action now to set an example for future generations.

I’ve heard that IP phones actually use a lot more energy than standard TDM phones. Is that correct? This is true. A Nortel 3904 TDM phone uses on average 1.5 watts. The Nortel IP Phone 2004 uses 3.2 watts and it goes up to 15.4 watts with other models. Color screens, back lighting of screens, more powerful chips, etc all drive up the watts versus TDM.

How do Nortel’s IP Phones stack up? We are very energy efficient because we have understood the magnitude in power change from the TDM phones. You can see energy awareness on the new IP phone 1200 series. These were designed with customers asking for lower power consumption to address the explosion of operational expense in the wiring closets. So the 1200 series is at the 3.2 watts level — about a 50% reduction from the 1100 series IP Phones.

Obviously this relates back to PoE requirements for Ethernet Switches. So basically if a company is looking to move to VoIP and energy consumption is an important component, do they need to look at their Ethernet Switches too? Absolutely! This is where the explosion in the electric bill is today and it’s forecasted to grow even larger. We are very focused with our ongoing 3rd party independent lab tests with the Tolly group to validate that our PoE energy consumption is less then Cisco and HP. We have an opportunity, even an obligation to help business managers think differently about IT procurement and break the framework of market share being an efficient decision criteria.

More green stuff

A random collection of Nortel Green facts and resources for your reading pleasure:

Today at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, Mike Z participated in a panel entitled: A Carbon Constrained America: Costs, Risks and Opportunities.  Some of his comments were highlighted in this press release Nortel issued this afternoon.
Also at the event, Nortel telepresence will also be used to facilitate four panel discussions in remotes locations - New Delhi India; Frankfurt, Germany; Raleigh North Carolina; and Paris, France.
Richard Bloom in Nortel put a lot of research into this article that does a great job summarizing many of Nortel’s internal and external green efforts.   This is well worth the 10 minutes required to give it a look.  Of …
