From the show floor at CTIA

CTIA Wireless 2008

Unfortunately I am not in Las Vegas for CTIA Wireless 2008 this week, but my teammate Miranda MacDonald was kind enough to give me an update and some pictures straight from the Nortel booth (#1939) on the show floor.

Click on the link below to see pictures and descriptions of what Nortel has going on at the show.

Apparently the most popular part of the Nortel booth at the show as been a three part demo presentation showing how new communications technology can improve various businesses - in this case a grower, a distributor, and a retailer in the global coffee market.

The demo starts off with a family coffee farm in rural Colombia. This part of the demo shows how broadband has changed the way the rural coffee farmer does business and interacts with the world. The farmer is shown using WiMAX to communicate directly with his SMB distributor in Bogota on the condition of crops:

The second part of the demo focuses on a small wholesale coffee distributor in Bogota who uses WiMAX to keep his business running efficiently, securely and with low overhead costs. He uses Nortel’s IP Powered Business Solutions for SMBs to provide an end-to-end VoIP as well as a Microsoft UC over WiMAX to communicate with both the grower and the retailer.  Alas we have no photo of this part of the demo.

Finally, the last part of the demo was the retailer - a coffee and internet cafe where Mobile WiMAX access is allowing a mobile worker to enjoy the end product of this chain (ie: the coffee), while connecting wirelessly to the office via WiMAX:

This demo was unique in that it tied together a ton of technology - SOA/Web Services, FMC, VoIP, WiMAX, Presence, UC, etc - to show the depth of Nortel solutions and what they can do for businesses and consumers. The demo was apparently captivating to CTIA attendees. Miranda says it was standing room only for pretty much every demonstration:

Now for some other pictures of the booth are below. First is one of Nortel’s Eric Bezille showing off Nortel’s SOA demo. I have absolutely no idea what all the bug and ant killer on the shelves has to do with SOA, but if you are interested in hearing more about SOA in this new podcast featuring Sita Lowman and the new leader of carrier multimedia networks, John McCready.eric-bezille-showing-soa-demo.JPG

Next up is Maniam P talking to attendees about Nortel’s LTE solution.

  1. Bo,

I just want to say that this is good stuff and keep up the good work. I always log on to Mark Evans blog but it seems he is more interested in the “bad” news and never really reports anything positive.

I am still very disappointed in the stock price but at least there was some positive news this week that BTW Mark did not blog about.

  2. Hello,

Just wanted to clarify something. All the bug and ant killer in the picture of Eric at the SOA/Web Services demo is part of Nortel’s SOA Garage demo. This a new demonstration and the idea was that it was supposed to show how easy it is to create new web applications with Nortel’s technology - so easy that even “garage developers” can can add cool, new applications like click-to-call to their websites by adding a few lines of code and couple mouse clicks.
