Coverage round-up from this week’s news
There were a ton of articles that came out from yesterday’s news. Here’s my list of the more insightful ones:
- Reuters has a nice summary of the news with quotes from the IR day event and several analysts, as does the Globe & Mail.
- Telephony did a nice feature on the LTE/WiMAX news that included an interview with Scott Wickware.
- Light Reading provided probably the most in-depth coverage of the Carrier Ethernet win with Verizon.
- Barron’s debated which piece of Nortel news was responsible for the stock price increase.
- The LTE vs. WiMAX debate raged on, with Network World talking about what it means to Nortel, and Tech Observer talking about what it means to the industry.
- Total Telecom focuses on the WiMAX news, and pulls quotes from Richard Lowe and Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion.
- Unstrung and RCR Wireless also covered the wireless news.
- Updated: The Financial Post talks to analysts who say that Nortel looks to be making the right decisions.
- Updated again: TechWorld talks about how the deal with Alvarion doesn’t mean Nortel is exiting the WiMAX market.
And from some of those articles came a few quotes that you might find of interest:
- “The things the Street likes on the conference call today are the confirmed guidance and the progress they are making on 40 gigabit and 100 gigabit metro ethernet equipment,” says American Technology Research analyst Mark McKechnie, who listened in to the investor presentation today. “They got an order from Verizon Communications (VZ) for metro ethernet, that’s the biggest takeaway.” - Barron’s
- “Nortel had to prioritize, and has decided that LTE was a bigger opportunity,” according to Richard Webb, directing analyst at Infonetics. - IDG News
- “Our strategy is to capture early adopter [LTE] trials, [and] focus on our installed base,” said Richard Lowe, president of Nortel’s Carrier Networks business. “I can win my unfair share of the CDMA conversion — I need to be focused, realistic and early to market.” - Total Telecom
- “Both WiMax and LTE represent game-changing opportunities for Nortel because they require advances in network speed and capacity that Nortel knows how to deliver,” said Lowe. - Reuters, CP
- Updated: “We walked away from the [analyst day] with more confidence in the management team and we heard a lot of detailed information that backs up management’s plan to dramatically boost operating margin.” [Chris Umiastowski, TD Newcrest analyst] said. “We have never before seen Nortel possess such strong focus on profitable execution of its business plan.” - Financial Post
