In case you haven’t seen it, Nortel CTO John Roese chimed in on our big news on the London 2012 Games. You can read John’s thoughts here. Our entire stable of Nortel bloggers was busy today giving their perspectives, including Phil Edholm, Tony Rybczynski, and Matt Konwiser.
Several industry pubs covered the news as well, and here’s a quick list of the more interesting articles:
Update: Greenmonk interviewed Nortel’s Dave Johnson on the news in this podcast.
TMCnet’s Green Technology section had this article that focused on how important the energy efficiency of Nortel’s solutions was to winning the bid.

Earlier today came the news that Nortel would provide the entire communications infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
With the London 2012 Games still four years away, the details of the network infrastructure are likely still being worked out. However, since Nortel is also a sponsor of the Vancouver 2010 Games only a year and a half from now, we can look at that network to get an idea for the scale needed to support one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Nortel recently went live with a new Nortel 2010 page that has a lot of great info and detail on what we are doing for the Vancouver 2010 network. Of particular …

Breaking news this morning that Nortel will supply the network infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited (LOCOG) today announced that Nortel is the Official Network Infrastructure Partner and the latest London 2012 Tier One sponsor.
What that means is that Nortel will be responsible for delivering the entire communications infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games — from the 10G metro network to the IP phones and everything in between.
Nortel will work closely with BT (who is also a tier one sponsor) in their capacity as the official communications services partner for the London 2012 Games. BT will manage the voice and data …

Here’s a scenario for you:
You have a work office in NYC, but travel to your company’s LA facility for a team meeting. Still on east coast time, you get into the office before anyone else and fire up your PC. You connect and use your new VoIP softphone client to send and receive VoIP calls right through your PC — allowing people to call (and receive calls from) your regular NYC office number.
Suddenly, you feel a sharp chest pain. Right before you black out, you are able to dial 911 through your PC softphone client.
So the question is, where do the police and ambulance show up? Unfortunately, if the above scenario did happen, police would very …

Add Australian contact center outsourcing specialist PCI to the list of companies that are taking energy efficiency into consideration when building their networks.
In this press release from last week, PCI CEO Phil Allan is quoted saying: “As with any large-scale technology rollout one of the biggest costs is the energy to power and cool the equipment. Nortel demonstrated such a clear lead in this regard with its energy-frugal equipment that the savings in ongoing operation and lower TCO were reasons alone to choose its solution, not counting all the other benefits it offered.”
PCI, who is building a new 6,000 square meter facility in Melbourne to accommodate its growth, is deploying a solution built on the Nortel CS …

It was just over a year ago that Mike Z appointed Steve Bandrowczak the CIO of Nortel. Since he took over, Steve has been a very visible and vocal spokesperson on Nortel’s direction — which is not how many people think of a “typical” CIO role. It turns out, though, that there’s a reason why Steve Bandrowczak is more externally visible than your average CIO.

Nortel announced another customer this morning for its recently unveiled 40/100gig solution. Rascom, an international bandwidth carrier for Russian service providers, is upgrading its existing 10gig backbone to 40gig for its sites in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm.
Rascom has been a Nortel customer since 1993, and was the first company in Russia to build SDH and DWDM fiber-optic networks. More recently Rascom has deployed the Nortel Optical Multiservice Edge (OME) 6500 and Common Photonic Layer (CPL).
Their existing Nortel infrastructure made this upgrade a simple installation of two 40gig transponders per node - and takes advantage of the fact that Nortel’s 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine can squeeze that increased amount of traffic …

Vacationers on the Greek island of Patmos will soon have free island-wide wireless Internet access. (photo credit patmos.com)It’s the middle of summer (for those of us north of the equator), and for many that means prime vacation season. But for an increasing number of workers, a vacation might mean some time on a sunny beach, but not necessarily a break from work duties.
One of the interesting findings of an IDC study that Nortel sponsored (The Hyperconnected: Here They Come) was that over one third of people surveyed check work email when on vacation.
Indeed it seems beaches everywhere are getting connected. The Greek island of Patmos …

It’s a bit of a light news day, so I figured I’d promote a Nortel video that recently won an award. This video highlights all the wonderful skills and expertise of Nortel Global Services.
In June, the Business Marketing Association (BMA) of New York City gave out it’s annual ACE awards. There were 436 entry submissions across a variety of categories, and this Nortel video (created by nFusion) won in the “Inventive Media” category.
