PBB gets approval from IEEE
One nugget of news that went under the radar recently was the fact that the IEEE approved the final standard for PBB, or Provider Backbone Bridges. PBB is of course one cog in the wheel of Nortel’s Carrier Ethernet portfolio. PBB is also at the core of Nortel’s recent Carrier Ethernet win with Verizon in their metro network backbone (a win that ironically was announced the same day the IEEE approved PBB).
As Nortel president of Metro Ethernet Networks Philippe Morin told Light Reading last month, Verizon’s decision to use Nortel and PBB over MPLS is a big endorsement since “the biggest challenge they [Verizon] have is scale.”
