There was some news this morning out of LG-Nortel, the joint venture between Nortel and LG Electronics that was formed back in 2005.
LG-Nortel announced the acquisition of Novera Optics, a WDM-PON (Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network) vendor based in Santa Clara, CA.
WDM-PON is a next gen “last mile” technology for in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments to allow for a huge increase in bandwidth for residential broadband users. I’m not an expert in WDM-PON, but a quick read of Novera’s technology page gave me this quick description:

Over the weekend, Alex Lewis had this interesting post on the hyperconnectivity.com blog about the possibility of AT&T looking to deploy WiMAX. This is one of several recent articles that indicate a possible bright spot for WiMAX, which has been taking a PR drubbing of late in comparison to LTE technology.
Unstrung, which has been following AT&T’s WiMAX activities closely for some time now, had this new article Friday indicating that AT&T might be considering WiMAX for rural U.S. deployments, especially as rising copper costs make rural DSL deployments more expensive.
