$6,100,000,000
$6,100,000,000 — that’s $6.1 billion with a ‘B’.
That big number is the estimated amount of money that the “Cisco Energy Tax” has cost businesses over the last five years. According to Nortel’s latest calculations, organizations around the world have collectively spent an estimated $6.1 billion* more on energy expenses in the last five years than they needed to.

How exactly did we get that number? Nortel took installed data/voice networks numbers from analyst firm Dell’Oro Group and crunched them through the Nortel Energy Efficiency Calculator (NEEC). Over the five-year period from ‘04-’07 and pro-rated YTD 2008, businesses have paid $6.1 billion* more in energy costs to power and cool Cisco networks than they would have had they used a comparable Nortel configuration.
These latest figures, part of a Nortel social media release issued this morning and paired with two new TV commercials now running on CNN, add more ammunition to the overall “Cisco Energy Tax” campaign that Nortel has been pushing hard.
The aggressive marketing has been noticed — but I’ve had several comments/questions from readers wondering if the marketing focus on energy efficiency is resulting in more leads, more sales, etc. The simple answer is yes. Here are some data points:
- This program has contributed to strong momentum in Nortel’s North American enterprise data business, including a four-fold increase in organic leads and a 42% increase in sales funnel, prompting Nortel to extend the program to a full global launch.
- Our enterprise data orders increased 22% in Q2 over Q1. And while we will not go so far as to make a direct causal tie between the two, this provides a good indication of the positive momentum we are seeing with customers.
- Based strictly on the NEEC itself, we are pursuing an additional 400 discussions per month with prospects that would not have taken place otherwise.
- And of course we continue to announce new customers that say our energy efficiency advantage is important, including recent wins with the New York Mets and the 2012 Olympics in London.
So when you see today’s new commercials, and read today’s press release - keep in mind that Nortel has a laser focus on the topic of energy efficiency because it is resonating with our customers, and it’s showing results for Nortel.
Now for the fine print:
*The calculated savings is an estimated assumption based on Dell’Oro reports and calculations using the Nortel Energy Efficiency Calculator for the time period ‘04-’07 and pro-rated YTD 2008. All assumptions are available at www.nortel.com/SaveEnergy .
