From the show floor at WiMAX World

Nortel joins other vendors this week in Chicago for WiMAX World.  This is the first wireless-focused industry event that Nortel has participated in since it’s recent strategic partnership with Alvarion was announced earlier this summer — so there is probably a little bit of extra interest in what Nortel is doing at the show (Alvarion has a booth at the show as well, and Nortel has several booth-to-booth demos running with them).

One item that Nortel is showing at the booth, and that was highlighted in a press release today, is a focus on VoIP and unified communications over WiMAX.  On the booth, Nortel is showing off some of it’s collaboration with IBM to deliver UC capabilities for Lotus Notes users over Mobile WiMAX technology — providing access to a range of services including IP telephony, instant messaging and web conferencing.

Nortel has also launched a new “VoIP to the MAX” solution, which is an end-to-end, fully-integrated Carrier VoIP and WiMAX bundle targeted at services providers who are looking to deliver IP voice and multimedia services over wireless broadband technology.

Thanks to some help from a few people attending the show, we have some pictures and video directly from the Nortel booth to show you.  In the below video, Danny Locklear, the leader of Carrier Networks product marketing for Nortel, talks about what Nortel is focusing on at the show.  Below his video are a couple of pictures of the Nortel booth.

  1. Cool stuff, I am a big beliver in Wimax and think it can could be great with almost unlimited possibilities. But the issue for the world is will Nortel be around in the next year or so? When will Nortel start showing positive earnings Q after Q? Up to this point you guys are really disapointing investors and scaring clients. Please address the above without a the spin.

  2. Hey Nortelhand - you are asking me to provide guidance and/or speculation on our stock price and our future direction. You and I both know that I can’t do that.

  3. Thanks Bo, you have a critical role for in Nortel. I see you provided more confidance than any of your Execs. I hope they do not put you chopping block for doing a good job.

On the topic of this blog, I have seen WiMax working in the underdeveloped regions. It have lots of potintial and companies like Ercsn, Huawei and CSCO are winning in these markets with real revenue. Yes Nortel have clear understanding of what Application can be enabled by WiMax, very impressive. But, who is going to sell it for you? where are your sales folks? Please let us hear from Mr Nelson how is he helping and ramping up his sales force to sell new technology? Does he work for Nortel still?

  4. Hey commentor - Yes Bill Nelson is definitely still at Nortel. To your question of “who’s going to sell it,” Nortel has very well-established relationships with carriers and wireless operators globally, and that existing sales team will position WiMAX (as it fits) as one of various solutions we offer to them.

I think your question is more directed to emerging markets and greenfield opps though. I’m not sure if we have an “overlay” WiMAX sales team that might address these opps. Let me see what I can find out.
