Visiting Nortel’s labs in Richardson

Recently here at Nortel’s Richardson campus we had a “technology day” that allows the entire employee base to get an inside view on the various labs and customer showrooms that we have on campus. I took the opportunity to take a few pictures and a little video of the event.

Various R&D and tech leaders set up peds in the Nortel cafeteria to talk about the areas they focused on. You can see a quick video of that part of the event here:

In addition, employees were able to sign up for tours of the various local Nortel labs and customer showcase areas. Below are some …

Nortel to supply network for 2012 Olympic Games in London

Breaking news this morning that Nortel will supply the network infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited (LOCOG) today announced that Nortel is the Official Network Infrastructure Partner and the latest London 2012 Tier One sponsor.

What that means is that Nortel will be responsible for delivering the entire communications infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games — from the 10G metro network to the IP phones and everything in between.

Nortel will work closely with BT (who is also a tier one sponsor) in their capacity as the official communications services partner for the London 2012 Games. BT will manage the voice and data …

Guest post: News, noise and networking

The Nortel Asia Summit came to a close yesterday. For our final bit of coverage on the event, Rick Seeto, Nortel’s VP of marketing in Asia, has provided us with some parting thoughts on the Summit — why we hosted it and how we think it turned out. Here is his guest post:

Nortel Asia Summit spurs raft of unified communications news

Anytime you invite dozens of the region’s most important media and analysts to come and talk to your senior execs, it’s probably a good idea to have a lot of news to talk about.

That’s exactly what Nortel is doing this week with a panoply of press releases related to the APAC region — all in support of this week’s Nortel Asia Summit in Sydney, Australia.

I’ve already talked about two of the releases, the 40gig win with Southern Cross Cables and the appointment of new leaders for the APAC region, but most of the week’s news has been focused on new unified communications deployments. While some of last year’s media hype about UC has quieted a …

In Sydney, Nortel Asia Summit

From July 1-3, Nortel will be hosting over 60 analysts and media from all over Asia Pacific in Sydney, Australia for our first ever Asia Summit.

As you’d expect from a large-scale shindig like this, the three day event will feature panel, breakout and 1-on-1 sessions led by Nortel executives and subject matter experts. We’ll show off carrier, enterprise and services demos, and have IDC on hand to talk about Hyperconnectivity.

Bo and I don’t get to go to Australia, but expect a daily digest from us on the news coming out of Sydney. This includes key announcements, from-the-floor reports by our colleagues and a guest post recap at the end of the week.

Stay tuned…

Reactions from the showroom floor: WiMAX Forum Global Congress 2008

While NXTcomm08 was the big news on Buzzboard last week, Nortel was also attending WiMAX Forum Global Congress 2008 in Amsterdam.

This was our first WiMAX event since the announcement of our alliance with Alvarion earlier this month. Featured speakers at Global Congress included Barry West, CTO Sprint; Ron Resnick, President and Chairman, WiMAX Forum; Tzvika Friedman, CEO, Alvarion; and Scott Wickware, VP and General Manager WiMAX, Nortel.

Alvarion was very clear about the alliance being a landmark event for them, and Nortel used the event to showcase this new collaboration and demo our joint Mobile WiMAX solution, which combines technologies from both companies.

How did customers and analysts react to Nortel’s presence at the show and our joint solution demos …

NXTComm08 round-up and pictures

I’m a little behind on my coverage of NXTcomm08, so for your reading pleasure, here is a quick recap of what happened at the show this past week:

Nortel announced hosted unified communications solutions with Microsoft and IBM, as well as two new carrier Ethernet customers.
We participated in discussion panels that spanned broadband services, IPTV deployment, service delivery for Telcos and unified communications.
We showcased demos related to optical, carrier Ethernet, IPTV and carrier VoIP.
We hosted a customer appreciation event at the Wynn Hotel during game 6 of the 2008 NBA Finals. Bill Nelson, who lives in Massachusetts and is our executive vice president of Global Sales, was in attendence. The Celtics won. (We’re not taking credit for that last …

UC for the rest of us

The phrase of the day is “hosted unified communications.” That’s what we announced this morning at NXTcomm08 with Microsoft and with IBM.

What is hosted UC? An easier way for SMBs to get their hands on features like presence, unified messaging, multimedia conferencing and collaboration. SMBs can have carriers host their UC systems for them without buying, installing, managing and maintaining an in-house system. To borrow a recent Apple tagline, it’s like UC “for the rest of us.”

And hosted UC caters to roughly 90% of existing desktop environments.

Hosted UC ties our Communications Server (CS) 2000 with Microsoft’s solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration Version 4.5 — which includes Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and …

Back to Vegas: Preview of Nortel at NXTcomm08

Didn’t the whole industry just get back from Las Vegas…several times? First CTIA Wireless, then Interop, now NXTcomm08. NXTcomm08 is of course the reincarnation of SuperComm, and is mainly focused on the carrier and service provider side of things.

And just like with previous shows, here on Buzzboard we’ll keep you in the loop on that Nortel has going at the event. I have a suspicion that Nortel will be announcing some news at the show, and we’ll cover that. We will also hopefully bring you some pictures and video from the booth.

If you happen to be headed out to NXTcomm, here’s a quick summary of what you can …

Notes from Pavi Binning’s speech at IR Day

Pavi Binning, Nortel’s CFO, was next up on the agenda. Here are some notes from his presentation:

Pavi said that Nortel’s goal was to reduce IT costs by 10% in 2008 and finance costs by 25% in 2008
He also showed the below chart, which provided a view of how Nortel’s revenues will evolve from today to 2011, and the CARGs for each business unit needed to achieve those goals.
