Guest Blog on GigaOM: Broadband’s Kindle Paradigm

For those of you who don't follow Om Malik’s blog, GigaOM, I’ve written a guest entry at the invitation of Om that you might find interesting ...
A year or so ago, I began talking about how moving toward the 4G world of WiMAX and LTE (and UMB at that time) would enable a broad range of new devices to be connected economically to the mobile Internet. I speculated that the economics of 4G – at roughly 3X capacity (based on spectral efficiency improvements of OFDM-MIMO) and one-third of the price (based on system simplification) – would likely result in the cost of connectivity dropping by an order of magnitude.

I also speculated that if ...

Some Predictions for 2008

Since it’s the beginning of a new year, I thought I would go out on a limb and posit some predictions on what we might expect to see in telecom and IT in 2008. As with all predictions, these are at best qualified guesses, but let me try to explain why I think they might happen.

#1: WiMAX (production) and LTE (trials) will get some real air time and more people will see that they offer fundamentally different experiences and have different ecosystems than either cellular or wireline networks.

Today, far too many people look at emerging 4G technologies and try to compare them to 2G and 3G cellular networks. The challenge with that is that the total experience, ecosystem and ...

A Conversation with Our Chief Strategy Officer

Location: Ottawa

Over the last several months, a number of you have left comments or asked questions about Nortel’s strategy and direction. Some of you have also left similar comments and questions in other industry blogs and forums.

I thought an interesting and more personal way to tackle some of those questions – instead of just doing a long blog entry – would be for you to hear directly from George Riedel, our Chief Strategy Officer. So, just before the holiday break, I took the opportunity to do a podcast interview/have a conversation with George while we were both at Nortel’s headquarters in Toronto for various meetings.

I essentially asked him many of the questions that you’ve been asking ...

A New Year for Telecom

Location: Train from Toronto to Ottawa

Hopefully you have all taken some time off to recuperate from a crazy year and prepare for a truly transformational year in telecom in 2008. I spent a few much-needed weeks recharging over the holidays, and also spent some time reflecting on 2007 and what we have to look forward to in 2008. I thought I would take a few minutes in this first post of the new year to set the stage for 2008 and to share my excitement about the inevitable acceleration of change in the telecom and IT landscape.

This week at CES, Bill Gates gave the opening keynote (billed as his “final” CES keynote, as he transitions away from day-to-day ...
