Guest Blog on GigaOM: Broadband’s Kindle Paradigm

For those of you who don't follow Om Malik’s blog, GigaOM, I’ve written a guest entry at the invitation of Om that you might find interesting ...

A year or so ago, I began talking about how moving toward the 4G world of WiMAX and LTE (and UMB at that time) would enable a broad range of new devices to be connected economically to the mobile Internet. I speculated that the economics of 4G – at roughly 3X capacity (based on spectral efficiency improvements of OFDM-MIMO) and one-third of the price (based on system simplification) – would likely result in the cost of connectivity dropping by an order of magnitude.

I also speculated that if the cheapest cellular plans then available – which were just under $10 a month – were to emerge as the price point for connecting something to the new mobile Internet, then the cost of connectivity might actually end up being buried in the cost of a content subscription. 1. John,
America has 50 states and only one of them doesn’t use Cisco. That happens to be where I work. We need to talk, I can help. Nortel could benefit from my opinion.

Send me an email and I’ll send you back my cell number.

  2. John,
When will Nortel change its strategy of being content with its role as a network enabler ,one of the ‘wizards’ behind the curtain (reference to the wizard of Oz) and start developing and marketing functionality that the public recognizes as truly innovative? Since leaving Nortel I have followed the stock and market articles on Nortel daily and feel disappointed that there are little signs of innovation and creativity as there was during the time when I was an active employee.
The demand for Broadband usage has increased in residential and businesses (I suspect more predominately in residential) as Telcos like Verizon deploy FTTP and bundle Triple and quadruple play functionality. Does Nortel have any highly visible residential solutions that increases the brand awareness and hopefully increases the stock price? Can you deploy, for example, residential /small business Pico cells that provide secure, multi room video, internet, phone economically by pulling from the FTTP, demuxing the appropriate channels/frequencies and distributing wirelessly, the content to the intended target (various TVs , PCs, Telephone sets, Computers)?
I hungrily look for innovation & creativity from the company I truly enjoyed working for in the past. While I was there I was known for my creativity in the services area. Are there any creative product developers left?
Please show the world Nortel still has the imagination and foresight to lead instead of just follow.
