A Question of Contention
Michael Rosender is kindly coordinating a presentation that I am doing for the CTCA/STC Conference in September. As we exchanged emails, he asked a question and I thought posting the answer would be appropriate.
Michael's question was:
I have a question I would like to ask you in the meantime: Why have we focused on using contention based protocols such as Ethernet, WiFi, (remember when it was WECA - wireless Ethernet?), WiMax, etc. for isochronous, streaming media such as audio and video? It seems like a lot of technology and effort goes into dealing with this. I appreciate that packets need to avoid collisions in IP networks but it seems like an awkward kludge. Is there any alternative?
